    Description

If you enjoy the classic look of an older receiver, you will really enjoy what this FRG-8800 has to offer.  It was manufactured by Yaesu with a production run from 1985 to 1993.  We list the features of this receiver in the information below.
Cosmetically, the unit is in wonderful overall condition showing only minor signs of age and prior ownership.  This is a very nice looking receiver.  Please review our pictures carefully for specific cosmetic detail.
Electronically, the FRG-8800 works like a gem.  We have been blessed over the past 45 years in the hobby of being able to test and use a wide variety of receivers....tube, solid state, portable, desk top, rack mount, consumer, and mil spec.  With our personal hobby interests and with what we have sold on Ebay, we have had our hands on over 200 different communications receiving units.  However, in using this FRG-8800, this was only the forth time that had our hands on the controls to take this receiver for a ride as we don't come across this receiver very often with the last FRG-8800 sold here by us on Ebay 4 years ago.  And using and testing the FRG-8800 was a fun ride, indeed, as the receiver is very sensitive and a joy to operate.
We checked the receiver out using my variety of outdoor antennas, but also connected a short whip to the back to verify reception of the shortwave bands and got pretty remarkable reception even using the short whip.  We don't recommend using a short whip antenna for normal listening, but it is helpful for us to connect such an antenna to test in this manner and verify receiver sensitivity with such a reception handicap.  Poor receivers will get almost no reception with such a short whip.
    Included with this receiver are:

Every shortwave receiver that we have ever operated has its own personality and traits.  The FRG-8800 was no exception.  The s-meter was probably the nicest ones we have ever encountered.  As the signal gets stronger, it is recognized on the large s-meter with segments that are increasingly larger.  It is easy to see a good visual record of the signal on the gorgeous green meter.  Also, the engineers at Yaesu included a built in SINPO (strength-interference-noise-propagation-overall) code into the meter to assist when reporting signal strength for logging purposes or to accurately communicate signal strength to various shortwave broadcasters.
Secondly, when tuning, this FRG-8800 allows the operator to tune quickly by allowing keypad entry of either the MHz or KHz.  Thus, let's say you want to quickly move from 21.750 to 11.750 to place the receiver in another shortwave band.  You do not need to key in all five digits, just the first 2 digits of "11" and press MHz. The receiver then quickly jumps down 10 MHz to 11.750 with little tuning effort.
Most of the other controls operate as you would expect and the Yaesu is configured nicely like its earlier predecessors like the FRG*7 and FRG*7700.  The onboard speaker is very good as far as what you normally hear on communications receivers and made listening to the various stations very enjoyable.
The FRG-8800 were supplied with factory attenuation of the medium wave and longwave bands, but this can be modified (removed) if desired.  In fact, this version of the 8800 does well in the utility bands and is highly stable after only a few minutes of settling in time.
Yaesu has a nice heritage of manufacturing great shortwave and amateur radio products.  This FRG-8800 is no exception and is a fine contribution by Yaesu to the hobbyist market.  We believe that the new owner will enjoy many hours of great listening with this receiver.
